The repeal of the sales tax exemption, the luxury tax and addition of a municipal personal property tax will devastate the state's marine trade's industry which is just now beginning to recover from the recession. These proposals will not provide the state with the long term financial gain it expects, rather if passed, they will result in:

  • A loss of millions in revenue for the state in taxes because this industry can be much more transient than any other industry in CT, boaters will travel to the neighboring states

  • Loss of jobs when boaters go to other states for sales and servicing

Connecticut has over 500 businesses involved in recreational boating, 300 of which are members of the Connecticut Marine Trades Association. During good economic times this industry employs about 12,000 people across the state, on the shorelines and inland with a payroll in excess of $375 million. These businesses would normally generate over $1.5 billion in annual sales and contribute $45 million in sales tax revenue alone. The marine industry also contributed over $10 million in property taxes and $4 million in out-of-state sales tax. The state will LOSE this revenue!
